Finance Minister Pierre Edde quit his job the first open break I in the Lebanese Cabinet since army commander Fuad Shehab was named president-elect by Parliament Thursday. Ministers loyal to President Chamoun worked to persuade Premier Sami Solh to remain in office until Chamoun's term expires. Solh was said to he embittered by the election of Sehab, a longtime political foe, and there have been rumors that Solh's resignation is imminent. Reliable informants said Edde, a member of the midroad National Bloc, resigned because he felt Shehad should be given some authority immediately although he is not scheduled to take office Sept. 24.

The Cabinet at a meeting Fri-day'refused lo take such a step. The sources said, however, Edde did not consider his resignation as a hostile action against Chamoun. He was succeeded as finance minisler by Joseph Sha-rier. who served as acting minister recently when Edde was ill Informants said pro Chamoun Cabinet ministers had talked Solh into postponing any resignation and perhaps slaying in office until Chamoun's term ends. If Solh should resign, jt would leave Chamoun in an increasingly difficult spot.

He would find it almost impossible to get anyone I else to form a Cabinet for the few weeks remaining until Sept. 23. And if Chamoun should be left without a Cabinet, the pressure would be increased for him to resign before his term ends. Cairo and Damascus have urged Shehab to dump Chamoun now and get American forces out of Lebanon. Then came panic. a said 3'i year-old Pamela from the back seat, "the baby's gone. "He fell out the window a few blocks back," she added calmlv. Mrs. Thompson began to cry.

Pamela and brother Dennis looked on wide-eyed. Thompson pulled the car back onto the street he had just travelled and began a frantic search for 2' 2- jyear-old Vernon Melvin. He couldn't find him. A few minutes earlier, M. G.

Vanderlip, telephone company employe, had seen the blond child sitting in the road screaming and bleeding profusely from the head. Inose and shoulders. He stopped his truck. An elderly woman also had stopped her car and picked up the child. She handed him to Vanderlip.

"I saw him fall out of a car." she quavered. "You'd better take him to the hospital I'm too nervous." Vanderlip, his j-liirt by now soaked with the boy's blond, pu; him in the truck and raced to Memorial Hospital. Within IS minutes the boy's father, making a desperate call to the hospital, learned the boy was there. No bones were broken. The child was treated for his abrasions and sent home.
