Lessie Swann OLD FORT Lessie Lee Giles Swann, 95, of Greensboro died Monday morning in the Masonic and Eastern Star Home in Greensboro. Born in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late William Sherman and Margaret Talbert Giles. She was the wife of the late James Alberta Swann.

She was a member of the Asheville chapter of White Shrine and a 50- year member of Old Fort Chapter 175 Order of the Eastern Star. Surviving are five grandchildren, Mrs. Pat Ledbetter of Granite Quarry, Gayden Swann of Old Fort, Dr. Robert Ricks of Chevy Chase, and Jim and Swannee Ricks of Marion; and five great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m.

Wednesday in Old Fort First Baptist Church, of which Mrs. Swann was the oldest member. The Revs. Ron McCracken and John Hicks will officiate. Burial will be in Old Fort Cemetery.

Yates, 91, of the North Carolina Baptist Home died Monday at the home. She was a native of Mars Hill and a daughter of the late Jim and Bexie Smith Jarvis. She had lived in Chadbourn for many years and moved to Asheville in the early 1950s. She was a member of Asheville First Baptist Church. Her husband, John W.

Yates, died in 1948. Mrs. Yates is survived by a sister, Gwendolyn Young of Winter Park, Fla. Memorials may be made to Western North Carolina Baptist Home, 213 Richmond Hill Drive, Asheville. Morris Funeral Home will announce arrangements.

John Beddingfield NAPLES Services for John Otis -Beddingfield, 66, of Naples, who died Sunday, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Shepherd Memorial Park Mausoleum chapel with Elder D.E. Wagner and the Rev. Harold McKinnish officiating. Burial will be in the park.

Beddingfield, a native of Henderson County, was a son of the late John and Eula Pace Beddingfield. He worked for Cranston Print Works for 25 years before retiring last year. A native of Madison County, she was a daughter of Rosie Cutshall Tweed of Marshall and the late Milton Tweed. Surviving, in addition to the mother, are her husband, Grover Franklin; two sons, Wendell Franklin of Warner Robins, and Dale Franklin of Asheville; a daughter, Patricia Gosnell of Marshall; six brothers, Winston and Dennis Tweed of Marshall, William Tweed of Fletcher, Gilbert Tweed of Greeneville, Hoye Tweed of Indianapolis, and Guy Russell Tweed of Salem, four sisters, Demania Gentry of Asheville, Margie Gilbert Norfolk, Barbara Jenkins of Anaheim, and Betty Davis of Indianapolis; and four grandchildren. Kenny Buchanan BURNSVILLE Kenny Buchanan, 16, of Marietta, died Saturday in a Marietta hospital after an automobile accident. He was a member of the sophomore class of Lassiter High School in Marietta and was the adopted son of the late John R.

Buchanan. Surviving are the adoptive mother, Magdaline Nancy Scalf, and the stepfather, Donald L. Scalf, both of Marietta; the father, Herbert H. Coward, 67, of 8-B Mountain View Apts. died Monday in the Asheville VA Medical Center after an extended illness. He was a native of Madison County and a former resident of Paulsbo, for 40 years. He came to Canton nine months ago. Coward, a son of Bonnie Hall Norris of Canton and the late Noland Coward, was a retired boilermaker and a U.S.

Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the VFW Post and First Presbyterian Church in Paulsbo and of the Fraternal Order of Eagle. Surviving, in addition to the mother, Paulsbo; are a three daughter, sons, Sherry Bobby Ann Coward Smith of Atlanta, William N. Coward of Paulsbo and Douglas S. Coward of Manassas, a half sister, Ruby C.

Brown Crook of Candler; a half brother, James M. Norris of Canton; and nine grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Snow Hill United Methodist Church cemetery. The Rev.

White John Clarence White, 84, of 84 Rice Branch Road, Asheville, died Monday morning in the Asheville VA Medical Center. White, a lifelong resident of Asheville, was a son of the late John P. and Lillie Calloway White and was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church. He served with the 30th division of the U.S. Army in World War I and was a member of the World War I Barracks No.

505. He was a weaver for many years with Biltmore Homespun Co. and later was employed with Sayles Biltmore Bleacheries until his retirement. Surviving are his wife, Sarah Davis White; five daughters, Cecile McFee of Hammond, Barbara and Janet Taylor, both of Asheville, Margie Gray of Concord and Jean West of Atlanta; a son, Allan White of Greensboro; three sisters, Carrie Parker, Ida Dungy and Jennie Ballard, and a brother, Lawrence White, all of Weaverville; 13 grandchildren and 16 greatgrandchildren. West Funeral Home, Weaverville, will announce arrangements. David Medford WAYNESVILLE David Hugh Medford, 79, of Truckee, died Sunday at his residence following an extended illness.

A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late J. Sam and Fannie Mull Medford. He had resided in California for a number of years. Medford retired from the U.S. Forest Service.

Surviving are his wife, Elma Medford; a son, Samuel Medford of San Jose, two sisters, Lulabelle Wilson of Candler and Josephine Burkhart of Waynesville; and a grandson. Services and burial will be held Wednesday in Truckee. Carroll Evans LEICESTER Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Carroll H.

Evans, 46, of Newfound Road died Sunday at his home after a brief illness. A native of McDowell County, he was a son of the late George and Alice Hensley Evans. He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, and he retired in February after 27 years with the U.S. Army. Surviving are his wife, Sarah Wright Evans; a son, Steven Evans of the home; four sisters, Mary Lindsey of the home, Hazel Walker of Taylorsville, Helen Lowery of High Point and Edith Buchanan of Marion; and four brothers, Donald Evans of Greeneville, Dean and Bobby Evans of Augusta, and Jerry Evans of Charlotte.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home with Lt. Col. Lathrop Utley, Army chaplain, and the Rev. Jackie Collins officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. 0 Staff Photo By Ewart Ball 'Henrietta' Memorial Stands At Entrance To New Nature Center Petting Area New 'Petting Zoo' Opens A petting zoo for children opened Saturday at the Western North Carolina Nature Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in conjunction with a memorial service for Henrietta the elephant, who died Feb. 9.

The petting area will be open during regular hours of the nature center, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday-Saturday and from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday. Animals will be farm animals, including goats, pigs, lambs, sheep and a baby calf.

Some of the animals were donated, and some were purchased by the center. The center had planned to open a petting 200 and had been keeping the animals in a barn for a lack of space. The Community Events space Henrietta occupied will be used for the 200. When the farm animals tire of being petted, they will be placed in a roped-off area for viewing only. In addition to the petting zoo, the center has added a venomous snake display and a fresh-water exhibit, according to Ann Heard, publicity chairman for the Nature Society.

Ellen Carr is president of the Nature Society, a sponsor of the center. The center will begin accepting applications in June for summer camp. County Commissioners Meet Asheville and Buncombe County governmental bodies will hold two meetings Tuesday. The Asheville-Buncombe Water Authority will meet at 8:30 a.m. in City Council chambers on the second floor of City Hall.

The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners will meet at 3:30 p.m. in commission chambers on the second floor of the Buncombe County Courthouse. Mothers Of Twins Meet Asheville Area Mothers of Twins Club will install officers at its meeting Tuesday in the Hungry Bull Restaurant, Tunnel Road. Officers to be installed are Lenna Bucy, president; Carol Hepler, vice president; Vicki Banks, secretary-treasurer; Marie Emory, public relations; and Martha Banks, publicity. Recognition awards will be presented. Cancer Benefit Supper The Leicester community will hold a benefit supper and auction Friday in Leicester Elementary School on New Leicester Highway. Proceeds will go toward treatment costs for Wayne Masters, 17, of Leicester, a leukemia victim in St. Joseph's Hospital in Asheville. The turkey supper will begin at 5 p.m.

Symphony Quintet Plays BREVARD A wind quintet from the North Carolina Symphony will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Dunham Hall, Brevard College. The concert, presented by the Brevard Chamber Orchestra Association, is free. The quintet will perform Wednesday for fourth-, fifthand sixth graders at Brevard High School. Jackson will speak at a meeting of the Roberson High School PTS at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the little auditorium. Young Democrats Meet The Young Democrats of Buncombe County will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Sheraton Motor Inn in Asheville. Sewing Course Planned The North Asheville Recreation Center will sponsor a sewing course on Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., beginning June 1 and continuing through July 20. Car Hits Train, Driver Escapes A 54-year-old Candler man escaped injury Monday afternoon when his car hit a moving freight train at a railroad crossing on North Bear Creek Road, according to the Asheville Police Department. Dale Franklin Eplee, of Route 1, Candler, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, police department reports showed. Eplee stopped the 1974 Ford station wagon he was driving at the railroad crossing, but the car rolled into the side of a moving Southern Railway freight train, reports said.

The accident occurred about 4:30 p.m. Because the train's engine had passed the crossing, the train operator didn't see the car hit and kept on going, reports said. Damage to the car, owned by Mildred Brock Eplee of Route 1, Cander, was estimated at $2,500. Wreck Injures Four Four Asheville residents were injured in a three-car accident on the Caroline Harrell Caroline Clayton Harrell, 85, of Hillside Nursing Home, Asheville, died Monday morning at the home after a long illness. A native of England, she had lived in Asheville for the past several months.

Surviving are two sons, Bill Harrell of Asheville and James Harrell of Carmichael, a daughter, Virginia Ingle of Barrington, seven grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Services will be held in Peoria, under the direction of Wilton Mortuary, 2101 N. Knoxville Peoria. Williams Funeral Service is in charge of local arrangements. Police Reports when the 1975 Ford, driven by Metts, moved right to attempt to change lanes.

The Ford forced a 1972 Volkswagen, driven by Slaughter, to the right, striking the third car, a 1973 Hornet, Smoky Park Bridge in Asheville about 4:30 p.m. Monday, according to city police. Admitted to Memorial Mission Hospital was Lura Katherine Slaughter, 19, of 14 Vista Drive. She was listed in stable condition, according to a hospital spokesman. Treated and released Monday from Mission Memorial Hosptial were: Azalea Means Metts, 58, of 21 Pfiffer one of the drivers; Mildred Ingle Pruett, 40, of 515 Deaverview Road, another driver; and Edna Rowland, 54, of 101 Dale Street, a passenger in the Rowland car.

According to an Asheville Police Department spokesman, the three cars were traveling west on Interstate 240 driven by Pruett. The Volkswagen then moved back to the left, striking the Ford. Metts was charged with unsafe movement, the spokesman said. Damage estimates were not available late Monday. Man Arrested Harris is charged with breaking into the Joseph S.

Simpson residence on 101 London Road on April 22 and stealing property valued at $1,000, including jewelry and a 12-gauge shotgun. A 23-year-old Asheville man was arrested Monday night by Asheville police detectives in connection with an April robbery of a home on London Road in Asheville. Willis Michael Harris, 23, of 921 West Chapel Road, was charged with breaking, entering and larceny and with forgery, arrest warrants showed. He was being held Monday night in Buncombe County Jail in- lieu of $10,000 secured bond.
