BRUCE STILES SYLVA Bruce Stiles, 66, of the Dicks Creek community, died GRAHAM LEWIS DAVIS ARDEN Graham Lewis Davis, 79, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, in a ife, Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at his residence after a period of declining health. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson local hospital.

A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was son of the late Dreyfus and Gertrude Brigman Davis. Mr. Davis was a retired teacher from Enka High School, where he touched the in the community and on Mount Pisgah, where he was known as "old man of the mountain." Surviving are his sons, Robert, Jimmy, Kenneth, Herbert and Levi McAfee, all of Asheville; daughters, Sandra Smith of San Antonio, Texas, and Deloris Anderson of Asheville; brother, John McAfee of Bridgeport, sisters, Jeanette M. Ledbetter of New Haven, and Ozella Landrum of Lake Lure; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; stepmother, Carline McAfee of Lake Lure; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. RICHARD CHESTER WEBSTER Richard Thomas Chester, 48, of Webster Road and Seminole, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002. at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness. A native of Augusta. he lived in Seminole, and Webster.

He was a lab technician for Florida Testing and a member of Seminole First Baptist Church. Surviving are his parents, Lawrence Chester of Webster, and Elizabeth Chester of Seminole; son, Jesse Michael Chester of Seminole; and brother, Robert Chester of Seminole and Caney Fork. The funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home in Sylva with the Rev. Harry Vance offciating.

27, 2002, at the Solace Center of Mountain Area Hospice in Asheville. She had been a resident of Givens Estates of Asheville, a United Methodist retirement community, since 1981. Her husband, Greeley L. Griffin, preceded her in death in 1993. Mrs.

Griffin was born Nov. 1, 1913, in Burnsville and subsequently lived in Asheville and attended Lee H. Edwards High School. She later worked for Southern Bell Telephone Co. in Asheville and with the TVA in Knoxville, Tenn.

She and Mr. Griffin were married in 1938 and lived in Maryville, until 1981. Mrs. Griffin is survived by her brother and his wife, the Rev. C.

Harley Dickson and Inez Dickson, who are of Cornelius and are summer residents at Lake Junaluska. Mrs. Griffin has nephews, Clarence H. Dickson III of Waynesville, Kenneth R. Dickson of Maggie Valley, and O.D.

Griffin Jr. of Asheville, and a niece, Judy Wood Griffin of St. Louis. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Biltmore United Methodist Church in Asheville, where Mrs.

He received his bachelor of science degree in psychology from Western Carolina University and his master's degree in social work from the University of Tennessee. A member of First Baptist Church of Hendersonville, he was a former deacon and Sunday school teacher and worked with the RAs, other youth groups and Builders for Christ. He received the Thomas J. Barrett Outstanding Achievement Award on behalf of N.C.

A devoted father and great lover of nature, Keith was born in Albuquerque, N.M., and came to live in Asheville 25 years ago. He was a devoted employee of the City of Asheville for more than 20 years.

He was 51 years old. He was the founder of the Shakespeare Conference, which has attracted dozens of public and private high school teachers to the Phillips Exeter campus each summer. While at the Academy he lived in Bancroft and Soule halls and, since leaving the dormitory, was an affiliate in Soule Hall. McGuinn also coached junior varsity basketball, organized and supported the Habitat for Humanity student group and advised PIP (People Interested in Poetry). In 1998.

he and his wife, Margaret, led the Academy's overseas program in Stratford, England. McGuinn's impact on students was enormous, and his love of Shakespeare especially contagious. He could find a quote from Shakespeare for any occasion and he or his students would sometimes stand on a table while performing scenes from Shakespeare. In recognition of his work in and out of the classroom, the Academy presented him the Brown Family Teaching Award in 1998. His life goals were to attend live performances of all of Shakespeare's plays and to visit every major league baseball park in the country.

Though he fell short on the ballparks, he and Margaret completed their Shakespearean odyssey by seeing all three parts of Henry VI performed in Stratford, England, during Christmas week, 1999. They treasured this trip always. An avid birder, he belonged to the New Hampshire Audubon Society and enjoyed travels that took him to spots as beautiful and various as South Africa, Alaska, North Dakota and the Southwest. Perhaps his favorite birding spot, however, was his own backyard. McGuinn deeply valued connections with family and friends and in the final month of his life, he enjoyed two weeks at Topsail Beach in North Carolina with Margaret; his best friend from childhood; his sister and brother-in-law and their children; his brother, sister-in-law and their new baby; and his mother and stepfather.

Two weeks later he sailed on a pad-dlewheeler on the St. Croix River in Minnesota with 37 members of Margaret's family, celebrating her mother's 76th birthday. He was a 1969 graduate of Aniston Academy (now the Donoho School) and of St. Andrews Presbyterian College. He received his Ph.D.

from the University of North Carolina. He was an NEH fellow at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and an NEH fellow at the Montaigne Institute at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash. In 1998 he worked with the scholar Vivian Thomas and the actors of the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford, England. McGuinn presented papers on film and performance to the Shakespeare Association of America; the National Council of Teachers of English; the Blackfriars Conference, where he was part of the opening of their new theater; and the New England Teachers Conference. His articles appeared in Shakespeare in the Classroom, Multiethnic Literature of the United States and in the MLA Approaches to Teaching series.

McGuinn also published several volumes of poetry, and his poems have appeared in Commonweal, Kansas Quarterly (for which he won an award) and other magazines. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; mother, Hilda; stepfather, Charles Home: brothers, Michael and Philip: sister, Patricia; four nephews and two nieces. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev.

MARY MULLEN MURPHY Mary Virginia Mullen, 74, of Panther Top Estates, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Kindred Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn. He served in the Army Air Corps, where he was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 891. Hubert was a 32nd-degree Mason, past member of the Asheville Board of Realtors, real estate broker, and appraiser for the N.C. State Deptartment of Transportation. He was a graduate of West Buncombe High School and UNC-Chapel Hill class of 1947. Hubert was the past president of the West Asheville Kiwanis Club.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Reva M. Redmon; children, Terry Sealey, Hamp Redmon, Mike Redmon and his wife, Nancy, Patti Redmon and Cindy Redmon, all of the Asheville area, and Phillip Redmon and his wife, Patty, of Chapel Hill. Six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren are also a part of his legacy. A private service will be held with the Rev. Harry Woggon officiating.

Dennis, former editor of the Henderson Daily Dispatch, died Saturday at his home after battling lung cancer. He was 81. Dennis, known as "Big Bill," served in many capacities at the Daily Dispatch from 1949 until his retirement in 1994. He was a photographer, obituary writer, sports editor, court reporter, police reporter and editor. He was even known to deliver missed papers.
