Payne has selected Our Voice as the organization to receive the $12,000 in grant money she has received so far. It is a gift that was stunning to a nonprofit that, because of the confidential nature of its work, is limited in the amount of publicity it can generate in hopes of raising funds. "For us, this kind of unexpected gift is almost beyond belief," said Sandi Rice, executive director of Our Voice, which operates with seven staff members, 25 volunteers and a $250,000 annual budget. "To receive this kind of money, totally unexpectedly well, it just makes an executive director giggle, and that's the best way to sum it up," Rice said. The windfall, which will be used to meet the needs of victims of sexual violence, is plenty important, Rice said.

But the value of the work done by volunteers like Payne cannot be measured, she said. "Robin is the type of person that embodies all the qualities that make up someone who really makes a difference in the community," Rice said. She is phenomenal in every sense of the word, and our community is absolutely blessed to have her." Riley Fields, director of community relations for the Panthers organization, said nominations from all over the country were sent in to Parade Magazine.

The nominations were then funneled back to the individual NFL teams, and a seven-member review panel selected the finalists and the winner. "The balloting clearly showed that the panel was inspired by Robin's efforts, not only by her work with Our Voice, but also by her level of commitment to a number of Asheville area agencies," Fields said. "The Carolina Panthers are privileged to be able to recognize Robin, who at this point is still at an early stage of her career as a volunteer. And we're confident that she will continue to accomplish great things and touch the lives of many individuals and families." Among those individuals are the kids at Volunteer who regularly perform community service projects under Payne's leadership, including feeding the homeless in Pritchard Park once a month. "Robin is awesome, one of my favorite people in the world," said Anna Maria Apostolopoulos, a senior at Asheville High School and one of the teens serving chicken wings, salad and macaroni and cheese to the hungry luncheon guests in the park.

"She's so fun, and she makes all these events fun," Apostolopoulos said. "She's really passionate about what she does, and she makes you want to be just as passionate as she is. Her energy just rubs off on you." Payne, for whom volunteerism is a way of life, said she is thrilled to be able to help Our Voice. But her volunteer efforts are no more than anyone else's could be, she said. "Many people get into the giving spirit over the holidays, and if they can just keep those feelings up throughout the year, we could all help make this community the best that it can be," she said.

"In light of one of our upcoming service days honoring the work of Dr. Martin Luther King he has said it best: 'Anyone can be great, because everyone can serve."
