AP MEMBER EXCHANGE FEATURE MOORESVILLE Preserving the history of the American automobile has been Alex Beam's mission for the past 23 years.

It's become a passion guided by his love for stock car racing. His private collections of old NASCAR race cars is believed to be the country's largest. "If I were just in this for the money. I could have the durndest yard sale you've ever seen, rent out these buildings and go on and do something else," he said. Beam bought his first antique car in 1968, a 1931 Model A Ford for $115, and had a tough time finding parts for its restoration.

When he married his wife, Daisy, she had a similar vintage car and he was accused of marrying her to get to her vehicle. By Wile Patrick Beam said, his sly grin showing, that he's "the only grease monkey to ever graduate from Davidson College." He planned to practice law, but got sidetracked. As a collegian, Beam was helping his father with a three milk route before classes and was 1 racing an old dirt-track coupe on weekends. A lesson learned outside the classroom: "I wasn't going to make any money racing." "And I knew that I didn't want to ever work on a job for somebody else," he said. "So I decided to look for ways to go into business for myself." When his father died suddenly, Beam took over the milk route.

He also started restoring antique cars more seriously. There are about 150 cars overall, including about 50 stock cars. Walk into one of Beam's warehouses and you'll see what Al Capone's fleet service might have looked like, with several pre-Prohibition and 1920s era models. Cars used in the movies, "The Color Purple" and "The Winter People" were Beam's. There's a maroon 1952 Chevrolet station wagon, a 1916 Model Ford, a 1924 Packard, a 1955 four-door Chevrolet, once a Dixie Cab; a 1962 Ford, a 1941 Ford, a 1933 Chevrolet, a 1932 Ford, a 1928 Ford.

There's a woodenbodied milk truck, a 1921 original. All are kept in running order, too. In another warehouse, there's NASCAR Winston Cup champion Dale Earnhardt's old Number 2 Wrangler entry, the one he drove for Curb Motorsports in his 1980 Busch Clash victory. There's a "Sampson," the car 1989 NASCAR champion Rusty Wallace drove to his first Winston Cup victory. There's an early Bill Elliott car; an entry Darrell Waltrip drove in his last two wins for Junior Johnson; Terry Labonte's car, a 1976 Monte Carlo, he drove when winning for the first time at Darlington.

A couple of oddities: There's the Skoallettered car movie producer Hal Needham drove to victory in the last Mexican Road Race, with a 300-mph speedometer. Remember the junkyard cars and some other articles in the garage in "Days of Thunder?" Those items and 20 cars were picked right off Beam's property and moved to the movie set when the crew filmed in the area. There's legendary Indy racer A.J. Foyt's first NASCAR entry, a 1968 Ford Torino. And, speaking of legends, the only Ford driven by Richard Petty, at Talladega, is on loan to Petty's own museum in Randleman.
