ARTEMIO 'ART' CALPINI SYLVA Artemio Calpini, 83, Wednesday, Regional Savannah priloseed 17, 2003, at Harris after a brief illness. Artemio was born 20, 1920, to Adolph Maria Sierra Calpini Pompton Lake, N.Y.

father, Adolph invented the tatneedle. It is mainly used to make fishing nets. Art was the last of 10 children. Art was an animation artist for Fleiser Studios in New York in 1940. He did Popeye, Betty Boop and Gulliver's Travels.

Art was a photo engraver for the Miami Herald newspaper while his children were young. He spent much time fishing, boating, skiing and swimming with his children. In his midlife, about 55 years of age, he went back to school and became an optician. While raising his children, he lived in Miami. Around 1980, he moved to Statesville and worked for Cable Television, selling cable until 1999 when he retired and moved to Sylva.

Art served in the Army under Dwight Eisenhower. He married Catherine G. Martin 65 years ago and she passed away Nov. 3, 2002. They had three children, John Robert Calpini of Tallahassee, Eileen Marie Calvert and Linda Gail Calpini, both of Sylva; four grandchildren, Sean, Christina, Lauren and Ted; and one great-granddaughter, Chloe Grace Adelman.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at MeltonRiddle Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Ron Allen officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. 9th Miami, FL 33136. EVELYN KELVINGTON SYLVA Evelyn Mefford Kelvington, 91, of Hooper Street, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health. A native of Vandalia, she moved to Jackson County in 1 1991. She was the last surviving child of the late John and Mary Parkinson Mefford.

She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Denny Keylor, who died in 1940; her second husband, William H. Kelvington, who died in 1989; and a son, Richard A. Keylor. She is survived by her daughter, K. Wallace of Sylva; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at MeltonRiddle Funeral Home chapel el with the Rev. Tim Dillard officiating. Burial will be in Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla. The family will receive friends following the services.

W. WILSON TAYLOR MORGANTON W. Wilson Taylor, 88, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003. The funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.

REV. GAROLD METCALF MARS HILL The Rev. Garold Dane Metcalf, 53, of 1931 Metcalf Creek Loop, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at Mission St. Joseph's Health System.

Rev. Metcalf was the son of Oleta Anderson Brigmon of Mars Hill and the late Robert William Metcalf who died in 1971. He was a lifelong resident of Madison County. He was formerly employed by the Grove Park Inn. In addition to his Rev.

Garold Metcalf mother, he is survived by his wife, Joyce Banks Metcalf; three daughters, Cynthia Scott and Angela Parks, both of Mars Hill, and Sara Shelton of Marshall; son, Robert Metcalf of Mars Hill; three sisters, Maxine Robertson of Oteen, Carolyn Suttle of Swannanoa and Donna Edwards of Mars Hill; and four grandchildren, Audrey Scott, Mitchel and Kelby Parker and William Shelton. The funeral services will held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Light bor Life Baptist Church, where he was currently serving as pastor. The Revs. C.J.

Robinson, Dale Banks, Ross Lewis and J.B. Shetley will officiate. Burial will follow in Tildon-Metcalf Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Isler, Brooks and Scott Suttle, Randy Shelton, Wesley Keith and Bryan Hopps. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Friday at Blue Ridge Funeral Service, 7626 N.C. 213, Mars Hill. The body will lie in repose at the church 30 minutes prior to the services. JANE WATSON SPRUCE PINE Jane Watson, 84, of Greenwood Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, in a Spruce Pine rest home.

She was the daughter of the late Young and Nancyte Midyette Shackelford and of Frank Watson, who died in 1996. She was also preceded in death by a son, Frank H. Watson Jr. and a daughter, Laura Jane Watson. Mrs.

Watson had served on the Spruce Pine Community Hospital Board of Trustees, the the Spruce Pine Library Board and the Mitchell County Department of Social Services board of directors. She was a member of the Spruce Pine Book Club, Spruce Pine Women's Club and Chapter PEO. Mrs. Watson was a member of Central Baptist Church and the Gleaners Sunday school class. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Watson Burleson and husband, Roger, of Spruce Pine and Muffy Watson Dayton and husband, Bobby, of Spruce Pine; sister, S.

Hypes of Staunton, grandchildren, Jennifer B. Gregory, Meredith B. Hoilman and Drew and Turner Dayton; and great-grandson, Benjamin Troy Hoilman. The funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Central Baptist Church.

The Revs. Jim Sutton and Larry Greene will officiate. Burial will be in Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the service hour Saturday in the church fellowship hall.

J.T. BLALOCK BURNSVILLE J.T. Blalock, 79, of Micaville, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, in the Asheville Veterans Administration Medical Center. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Ben and Pearl Harris Blalock.

He was a World War Army veteran, having fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He was a retired employee of Glen Raven Mills with 30 years of service. He was a member of Micaville Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deaelder die for 55 years. Preceding him death was a brother, Joe Blalock; and a sister, Alma McCurry. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Beulah Smith Blalock; two sons, Darrell Joe Blalock and Gerald T.

Blalock and wife, Vicki, of Micaville; daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Timothy Joe Grindstaff of Spruce Pine; four grandchildren, Kelly Joe Blalock, Benjamin Craig Grindstaff, Jason Theron Grindstaff and Noah Pitman Blalock; two sisters, Kathleen Young and Ruby Smith of Burnsville: and brother, Bill Blalock of Orlando, Fla. The funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at Micaville Presbyterian Church. Dr. Robert Garrison will officiate.

Mrs. Dannenburg was a lifelong resident of Buncombe County, born July 28, 1923, to the late Maggie Suzie Bridges and John Gordon Ray Jr.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Arnold Eugene Dannenburg, her sister, Anne Sue Townsend, and broth- Mary Dannenberg er, James Gordon Ray. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Benson L. JAMES 'JIM' WELCH BRYSON CITY James E. "Jim" Welch, 49, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003. A native of Aiken, S.C., he lived in Bryson City for the past five years. He was a member of Millbrook Baptist Church in Aiken.

He is survived by his parents, James W. and Ann Thomas Welch of Bryson City; two children, Dalton and Micah Welch of North Augusta, S.C.; three brothers, Joe wife, Kay, of Aiken, Phil Welch and wife, Kathy, of New Ellentory, S.C., and Mike Welch of Aiken; sister, Beth Shaw and husband, Milton, of Pittsburgh; Racheal McMahan of Bryson City; and several nieces and nephews.
