SO UTION FOR THAT ARTEMIO 'ART' CALPINI SYLVA Artemio "Art" Joseph Calpini. 83, of Savannah Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Artemio was born Oct. 20, 1920, toAdolph and Maria Sierra Calpini in Pompton Lake, N.Y.

Art's father, Adolph Calpini, invented the tatting needle. It is mainly used to make fishing nets. Art was the last of 1 0 children. Art was an animation artist for Fleiser Studios in New York in 1940. He did Popeye, Betty Boop and Gulliver's Travels.

Art was a photo engraver for the Miami Herald newspaper while his children were young. He spent much time fishing, boating, skiing and swimming with his children. In his midlife, about 55 years of age, he went back to school and became an optician. While raising his children, he lived in Miami. Around 1980, he moved to Statesville and worked for Cable Television, selling cable until 1999 when he retired and moved to Sylva.

Art served in the Army under Dwight Eisenhower. He married Catherine G. Martin 65 years ago and she passed away Nov. 3, 2002. They had three children, John Robert Calpini of Tallahassee, Eileen Marie Calvert and Linda Gail Calpini, both of Sylva; four grandchildren, Sean, Christina, Lauren and Ted; and one great-granddaughter, Chloe Grace Adelman.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Ron Allen officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
