Don't permit a foe to downgrade you. FRANKLIN New real estate tax valuations in Macon County were the topic Friday as about 500 people attended a meeting here. The most commonly asked question at the meeting was, "How can I get the tax valuation on my property reduced?" E. C. Shugart of the North Carolina Department of Revenue suggested a three-step procedure in reply.

First, Shugert said, persons who want to protest the new valuation on their property should contact Otis of CarrollPhelps, a land appraisal firm. The firm was hired by the Macon County Board of Commissioners to conduct a wide tax revaluation. The revaluation is required every eight years by state law. If a protest to Harvell does not result in satisfaction. Shugert said, property owners then can appeal to the Macon County Board of Equilization and Review.

The third step. Shugert said. would be an appeal to the State Board of Equilization in Raleigh. Oscar Ledford. former chairman of the Macon County Board of Commissioners, answered many of the questions.

Ledford was in office when the Carrol-Phelps firm was hired. Ledford said that for many vears a small proportion of the county's 14.000 taxnavers had borne the tax load. He said the revaluation will help to equaiize the situation. pointed out that some propertv owners more, than 35 vears old were entitled to exemntions. Ledford and Verlon Swafford.
