LIFE INSURANCE JOHN M. EHLE 209 Miles Bldg. AL 4-5662 HOSPITALIZATION Asheville Symphony Shows Beautiful, Singing Tones By LUELLE M. CLARK Citizen Staff Writer The Asheville Symphony Orchestra under the direction of M.

Thomas Cousins presented its third concert Tuesday evening at Lee Edwards High School auditorium. The particular quality of this new orchestra, a singing tone, was well shown in the program chosen. A Wagner prelude pervaded by a mood of repose and tranquility opened the program, Prelude to Act III of "Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg." From the muted cello to the ending, the Asheville Symphony interpretation was lulling, the melody cherished and soft-spoken. Harvey Miller of the Brevard College music faculty then left his violin and came to the piano to be soloist in Mozart's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in Minor. His touch is distinct but not dominant, and he played as if the piano had entered the tra, not separated itself from it.

It was a wonderful balance, with the singing strings to answer him, and occasional wind instrument solos of exceptional purity. The last movement was particularly pleasing in this total joining effect. After intermission (a fanfare announced the end of it from a few occupied chairs in the orchestra, and drew applause from those there to hear) Tschaikovsky's Fifth Symphony completed the program. The beautiful melodies were beautifully presented by this group, in an interpretation that did not underline emotion, but let the singing quality display itself in careful note rendition. The climaxes were not emotional either, and emphasized the melodic wholescmeness of this very melodie favorite.

At the next concert of the Asheville Symphony, the second movement of M. Thomas Cousins' Choral Symphony, "Sinai," for chorus and orchestra will be presented. Several church choirs will participate in this performance, on March 20. S. Moultrie Hanes Dies S.
