Hudson was found near death early yesterday, in the yard of Simeon home four miles south of Morganton. His throat had been slashed with an old pocket knife. He disappeared from the county home Monday night.

died this morning at Grace hospital after pneumonia developed. Before his death, however, he revived slightly and indicated to persons questioning him that someone beside himself had cut his throat. Officers said they believe it probable Hudson committed suicide, but added that there were some indications of foul play, Mr. and Mrs. Brittain reported that soon after they arose early in the morning they heard groans and upon investigation, they found Hudson lying in their yard, apparently dying.

They took him in their home, administered first aid A5 best they could while awaiting arrival of a physician and the sheriff, for whom they telephoned. He was removed to the hospital, where it was hoped for a time his life could be saved. When he revived sufficiently he was questioned concerning his wounds, but could only indicate he was the victim of foul play. Pneumonia developed and he succumbed some hours later. Guy McGimsey, superintendent of the Burke county home, told officers that the old man likely had a number of bills on his person, but only A small amount of change WAS in his pocket after he was found at the Brittain home.

Mr. McGimsey also said that Hudson always wore an old black hat, but the hat was missing and a cap was beside the wounded man. Hudson's identity remained a mystery for some time after he was found. It was only after Mr. Mc-' Gimsey had reported to officers that Hudson was missing that identity was established.

ALLEGED SLAYER TO BE EXAMINED Two Physicians To Talk To Schroeder After Court Adjourns INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 25. (AP)-Harold Herbert Schroeder, on trial In criminal court here for the murder burning of an unidentified man near here last May, will spend the week -end in the psychopathic ward of the city hospital undergoing an examination by two allenists appointed by the court. E. Rogers Smith and Dr. Charles D. Humes, specialists in mental diseases. Schroeder will be taken to the hospital after adjournment of court Friday evening and remain there until the 15 resumed Monday.

G.A.R. Commander Visits U. S. Hospital At Oteen General Jewel And Pal Of Sixties Reunited By Coincidence Two boys blue, their merry laughter and sparkling conversation making light of the years which have streaked their hair with silvery gray since they marched away to war beneath the stars and stripes in the sixties, and who are now notable citizens of Colorado, were reunited here yesterday by strange coincidence. They are General James E.

Jewel, 83, lawyer and farmer of Fort Morgan, and Dr. H. O. Dodge, 90, of Boulder. Both served in the Union army during the War Between the States, General Jewel in Company of the 27th Iowa Infantry, and Dr.

Dodge in Company E. of the 8th Illinois Cavalry, and since the war have met on several occasions, mostly at the mationa! encampments of the Grand of the Republic. General Jewel is present national commander-in-chief of the G. A. and his pal, Dr.

Dodge who formerly held this distinguished position, had the honor to nominate him for the command at the 1930 national campment which WAS held last August in Cincinnati, O. Meet At Col. Dodge's Home The reunion took place at the home of Col. H. C.

Dodge, medical officer in charge at the U. S. Veteran's hospital at Oteen. Col. Dodge is the son of Dr.

Dodge who is spending the winter at his home. Yesterday Col. Jewel who is on an inspection of soldiers' homes and veterans' hospitals in this part of country, arrived to Inspect the hospital at Oteen and Col. Dodge invited him to be his guest while this section. The two veterans gripped hands and smiled when they met in the living room at Col.

Dodge's home which is near the hospital, and immediately began asking questions and talking over "old times" and current events concerning themselves and their comrades. Soon afterwards, both were out in front of the home, laughing and talking while posed for photographs. Despite the chilly breeze blowing over the plateau, the two soldiers said the day was fine and when a bystander offered to assist Dr. Dodge in putting on his coat, ho said "I can get along all right" while his comrade, General Jewel, remarked that "we aren't old men yet." Both walked from the home and out on the lawn without using A cane. Friends Many Years The two veterans have been friends since the war, but have become more Intimate pals since adopting Colorado as their home state.

They have attended national encampments and reunions together and have stood staunchly together while each, refusing to retire from active life, followed his profession. General Jewel who owns three farms in Iowa, niso practises law with offices in Fort Morgan, while Dr. Dodge remained In the medical profession until. a few years ago. He has spent much time In writing his memoirs which are now being prepared for publication.

He is a member of the Masonic Lodge and has been a Shriner for 40 years. "You see Dr. Dodge there?" the General said after their photographs been taken, "well, he was soldier. He and I have been friends for years and last year he nominated me for national commander. I surely was glad to find him here.

We miss him back In Colorado," "The General is a great man," said his pal who went through the war a private. "Just now, he's the man mean our commander-In-chief, and we're proud of him." Enlisted When 17 General Jewel was only 17 years old when he heard the call to war at his home in Independence, In. He was made a color guard and in this dangerous position fought through several of the largest campaigns of the war. In battle the flag and the men who carried it were frequently the target for severe shell and rifle fire, and many times the young soldier narrowly escaped death. However, he came out of the war unscathed Among the engagements in which he participated were the battle of Nashville, on December 15 and 16.

1864, and the sieges of Fort Spanish MORGANTON MAN DIES OF WOUNDS Dick Deal Charged With Striking Carpenter With Hammer (Special To The Citizen) MORGANTON. Feb. Simmons, 40, carpenter, died in a Morganton hospital today from inJuries he received two weeks ago during an altercation with Dick Deal. Deal, who had been at liberty, surrendered again to officers and was held pending the outcome of an inquest. Deal has admitted striking Simmons on the head with a hammer after a disagreement at the home of Mrs.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Black Mountain Baptist church at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon by the Rev. J. M. Justice, and Interment will be in Bethel cemetery, near Oteen. Mrs.

Morris was A member of one of the oldest and most widely known families of this section.
