SIX-Section ASHEVILLE CITIZEN-TIMES. ASHEVILLE. N. SUNDAY, APRIL 15, 1934 With the ReadingHOTELS RESORTS GUEST HOUSES Write, Phone or Wire---Resort Editor, Asheville Citizen-Times For Full Information Western North Carolina Trout And Salmon Seasons Open Tomorrow ANGLERS EAGER TO TEST THEIR FISHING SKILL Regulations Explained By District Warden Bradshaw Tomorrow will not come too 500n for Western North Carolina anglers, for it will mark the opening of the trout A and salmon (Muskellunge) seasons. Fishing enthusiasts for some weeks have been eagerly awaiting the day.

The season for small-mouth bass does not open until June 11. J. A. Bradshaw, district fish and game warden, yesterday explained regulations governing the fishing seasons in Western North Carolina. Explains Sullivan Act Many fishermen in this county get confused over the Sullivan act which applies to the French Broad river.

he said. "It is lawful to fish in the French Broad river from where it enters Buncombe county to the Tennessee line without procuring a county license, he explained, "but other rules and regulations of the state department of conservation and development relative to inland fisheries, apply." "Above all," the district warden pointed out, "all anglers must fulfill license requirements. state anglers' law authorizes three classes of licenses which are as follows: resident county, resident state, and non-resident, $5.10. "County licenses are not required except in counties where county commissioners have authorized that they be levied. under provisions of the state anglers' law.

Any resident of a county providing such a county 11- cense fee ($1.10) 1s entitled to purchase a daily fishing permit for 50 cents. "Any person over 16 years of age fishing out of resident county by means of rod and reel, hook and line, or by casting is required to purchase a state license for which the fee AS $2.10. County licenses are required of persons who are residents of the following counties for fishing in the waters of these counties: "Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Cherokee, Clay, Haywood. Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Mitchell, McDowell, Polk. Swain, Transylvania, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yancey." Fishermen should bear in mind the regulation on open and closed fishing seasons, Mr.

Bradshaw said. He cited the regulation: Gives Season Dates "It shall be unlawful to fish or take fish by any means whatsoever in 'Inland fishing waters' of North Carolina from May 1 to June 10 of each year, both dates being inclusive: Provided further, that the closed season for certain species fo fish of the mountain section shall The CEDARS GUEST HOUSE miles from Asheville on Weavervile Road. BEICHLER, district forester, hastens to correct the information which was dispensed last week in outlining the fishing regulations for this part of the state. According to the official, there 15 no special season for Bream, this season running concurrently with the large-mouth bass season, or from June 11th to April 30, inclusive.

This column article last Sunday named closing date as Oct. 1, or the end of the small-mouth bass season, to go to the expense or trouble of joining an expedition to the Smokles or other remote fishing areas. By A. L. BANISTER reasons than fishing and hardly care The program of the Welcome to Asheville a8 announced during the past week includes a project that if carried to completion should prove attractive to residents as well as visitors.

The fishing committee of the civic organization proposes to establish clearing house for fishing information, and at the same time prepare for what may be a demand for close-in fishing grounds by assisting in the stocking and patrolling of near-by bodies of vrater. In this way, visitors may be able to enjoy fishing with a minimum of effort, although the stocking program will take some time and remove to a later date the ideal conditions expected and hoped -for. Such a project ia commendable, especially since many people come here for other be as follows: trout (all species), Sept. 1 to April 15 inclulve; smallmouth bass. Sept.

1 to June 10 inclusive: and muskellunge (salmon), Oct. 1 to April 15 Inclusive," Successful fishermen must also conform to the regulation limiting a day's catch of brook or speckled trout to 20, rainbow trout to 15, and all other trout to 25. All brook or speckled trout taken must be at least six Inches long. and all rainbow trout eight inches. TOURISTS Stop At SHELL ROCK CAMP On Marshall Road Highways 25-70 EXCELLENT MEALS C.

Dr. W. F. Bell will hesitate before condemning a dog for a slight misdemeanor In the future. The local sportsman, anannoyed by the noise made by two bird dogs quartered temporarily In his back yard, attempted to stop them by remote measures, or by throwing a rock or piece of dirt at them.

This falling he went into close quarters with the animals, who continued barking, and finaly stlenced them with sterner measures. As he left the pen where he hind placed them the evening before he heard a hissing sound, rather peculiar for his residential neighborhood. And In tree, leering (if these ankaals do such) at him and the dogs from the vantage point was a fat possum, evidently enjoying the show for which he alone was responsible. Just another proof that dogs are more but I'd better stop here for obvious reasons, although the gental dentist was frank In telling this one on himself. Plans for a get-together of hunters and fishermen of this section as outlined by Tom Cushing could readily develop into regular event, or even into a permanent organization.

The need for such an organization is -evident, with the altuntion in this phase of conservation requiring immediate attention. Objectives would include A close cOoperation between districts and counties. a permanent plan of stocking streams and lakes, a plan for supervision of hunting and fishing areas, and a proper exploitation of the section as a hunting and fishing dis- trict. The "muskles" will get big play from some fishermen in the next few weeks, according to reliable Information from the inner works. Several big boys have been spotted in feeding grounds.

They are to be offered to the National museum at the suggestion of Attorney Robert Miller, whose father, George O. M.ller, was chief of detectives at the time and atrested Gulteau.
