who had wounded two white citizens, concluded here this afternoon without the nling of any charges. Nearly fifty witnesses were paraded to the stand by Solicitor Woodus Kellum of the eighth judicial district, who conducted the hearing be-lore Judge E. H. Cranmcr oi South-port, filiting p-3 committing miig-Jstrate. All the witnesses leMsted efforts of the solicitor to wring admissions of culpability in the lynching from them.

Rogers was shot to deiith on a road leading from his home to Burpnw, after he had been wounded previously when fire routed him from his house, In which he had fought off for several hours a crowd of angry citizens who sought him for shooting Mrs. Tom Plner, 60, and R. T. Murray, a special deputy sheriff who had sought to arrest him for the Pincr shooting. It was established by the testimony of Dr.

R. C. Williams, Wallace physician, that Rogers, though wounded, twice, was still alive when the truck bearing him to Burgaw was stopped and the negro was pulled off by a crowd of white citizens and his body riddled with bullets. A feature of the- testimony was the admission of Sheriff J. T.

Brown of Pender county that he was present at the time of the 6 hooting on the road, but that he "Just didn't know what to do." The only person he could recognize after the shooting was "the boy who was fixing his tire," the sheriff said. A punctured tire had been given as the reason for stopping the truck. Another significant bit of evldcnco was the admission drawn from a rather reticent witness, Robert Bow-en, who said curiosity Impelled him to follow the truck that was bearing Rogers to Burgaw an that "I saw what I really went to see." "And what condition was the body In when you saw It?" the solicitor Inquired. "It looked like it had been shot," was the answer. Burney Johnson, who drove the death truck from the Rogers home.

The sinner needs the church, and we must make him real-lye that the church Is for him, understands him, and loves him. Much of the indifference of the world to the church, will be gotten rid of when we break ip the indifference of the church to the world. A church that is dead to the interest of the unsaved, is a dead church. The moral life of the Nation Is dependent on the spiritual life of the church. It Is not so much reformation which the world needs as regeneration. Surely It Is time to make religion a reality In our lives. A spirit of courageous faith should dominate us all.

Pastor Aeton Circuit Methodist Church. THE CHURCH IS THE DIVINEtiY APPOINTED AGENCY FOR CONVEYING THIS SALVATION TO THE WORLD. It Is time we were waking up to a realization of what the church of Christ really Is. The church Is God's agent In this world, through the church He docs His work, and the work of the church is to concern Itself with everything that effects the life of humanity. Its primary business is to save men.

There Is no organization or Institution, no avenue, or agency half so broad visloned In Its outlook on the needs and possibilities of men as the church. We have suggested in a former lesson that Saul's attitude toward David was possibly that of a man whose mind was Allowing temptations of Jealousy to gain hold upon him may have helped to occasion that derangement, but it would seem that Saul was the victim of dark and terrible moods, which were so foreign to his normal and better nature that we see the real man In the Intervals when he displayed a kindlier and more generous spirit. In our lesson. David Is compelled to hide from the menacing Jealousy of Saul while Jonathan Is the messenger to signal to David whether he may expect safety or danger from Saul.

He does this by shooting arrows which he sends a young lad to gather. 4 The Incident can be understood only as one reads the whole story. There was no safety for David at the court of Saul, and Jonothan, for the protection of his friend, frankly told him so. When Jonathan dismissed the lad with the arrows the way was clear for a meeting between him and David, but it was a meeting at which they were to part. Text: 1 Sam.

E. (ilLKOY, I. Editor of The CongrcgallonalM THE golden text of this lesson in Proverbs 17:17, "A friend lovcth at all times," la very appropriate, and expresses the vory heart of the lesson. Jonathan stands In history as one of the greatest types of loyal friends. A friendship, of course, Is mutual, and we cannot think of Jonathan without Including David; but David had mony i'r-asons for distinction, whereas the outstanding place that Jonathan has In Scripture and history Is because of his distinctive quality of loyalty and friendship.

Jonathan's case is remarkable as Jonathan was the son of the man. King Saul, who had become David's chief enemy and bin greatest source of menace. Perhaps Jonathan felt as intensely as he did in protest against his father's wrong attitude. He realised how little occasion for Jealousy David had given Saul, and he found In David a spirit akin to his own.
