BLACK MOUNTAIN NEWS News Approaching the Rainbow Community School Concert Hall in West Asheville, attend- ers of Nov. ben- fit for Gaza were surprised by a display of hundreds of black inwheels whirring in the win- ry breeze. On each small pinwheel was inscribed the name and age of a child killed during Operation Protective Edge -520 Palestinian children and one Israeli child. Departing the hall, each of the 90 people attending was invited to take one or more pinwheels to help remind themselves, members of their house- old and their neighbors of the human costs of war.

Western Carolinians for Peace and Justice in the Middle East, founded in Black Moun- tain in the previous decade, created the display of the Gaza Memorial Pinwheels. Now, the organization plans to display it at public sites in Black Mountain and Asheville. The group invites people in Black Mountain and Asheville to suggest places of worship, campuses, libraries, parks and other community centers where the memorial pinwheels can be displayed. The pinwheel project, most recent educational and advocacy project, was launched at the ov. 16 benefit concert featur- i ng Michael Dabroski.

abroski is a Vermont- ased violinist who serves as artistic director of music in the Great Hall, a world-class chamber music series serving Baltimore, in its 41 st season. He performed music by J.S. Bach as well as Palestinian melodies and his own composition for He also shared his impressions of people in Gaza ity, garnered during his conc ert tour in December 2013. His esponse to Operation Protect ive Edge in July 2014 inspired a series of benefit concerts like the one he played at the Rainbow school. last Sunday, cosponsored by Tree of Life Educational Fund based in Old Lyme, Connecticut (see to- lef.com).

rs. Futch was born in tarke, Florida and was a resident of Black Mountain. She was a member of Grace Baptist hurch in Florida and attended ountain View hurch in Black Mountain. She is preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Mathel Morrell Green a nd brother, dward Green. artha is survived by her husband, Ralph Futch; daughters, Kristina Osborne (Marvin) of Florida and Karen Sawyer (Jason) of Old Fort; sons, Tony Brantley (Cindi) of Black Mountain and Jeff Futch (Tisa) of letcher; sister, Sharon Sweat (Riley); grandchildren, Jessica, Ben, Weston, Anna, Jefferson, Jackson, and Andrew and great- grandchildren, Jake, Riley, and Isaac.

Deborah Ledford eaverville Deborah Ledford, 4 9, formerly of Weaverville, also known as MAH, went home be with The Lord on Nov. 15, 2014. She is survived by her four children, two sons-in-law, and ight grandchildren. Daughter Tenille Boone, and children; Trent en, Tegan, and ayten. Vaughn Wilson Black Mountain Vaughn Wilson died peace- ully in his sleep on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at his home in Black Mountain. He was 83 years old. r.

Wilson, son of Margaret eonore Wilson and Carroll Beryl Wilson, was born in Grove City, in 1931. He was edu- ated at Shady Side Academy 1945-49) and graduated from Duke University and Columbia University Graduate School of Business. He served for two ears at the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. In 1953 he married Doris lattner in Mountain Lakes, N.J. hey were together for 56 years until her death in 2010.

Mr. Wilson enjoyed a 30-year career in international banking with Citi- ank of New York and Barclays Bank International. He and his wife spent 17 years overseas as their two children were growing in Mexico, South Africa, audi Arabia, Lebanon and England. Mr. Wilson retired initially in Rhinebeck N.Y., before moving to Black Mountain in 1990.

Vaughn Wilson was a gentleman of quiet dignity, generous i spirit and action. During his 24 years in Black Mountain, he as active in a variety of church, educational and nonprofit organizations. His volunteer work included serving on he board of directors for the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County and Warren Wilson College's oard of the Friends of the ibrary and Board of Visitors. Most recently he was a Guardian ad Litem child advocate. Along with his wife, he was a olunteer in an after-school tutoring program.

was a supporter of numerous charities, most promi- ently The Salvation Army, ovenant House and Children International. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson enjoyed attending Elderhostels, trav- ling in the United States and playing bridge with friends. Reading and sweepstaking were also favorite pastimes of his.

He is survived by his daughter, Anne W. Siddens, of Oriental, N.C., his son, David C. Wilson, of Brighton, and three randchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen Todd of College Station, Texas. Amemorial service was held ov.

22, 2014 at Highland Farms in Black Mountain. Internment his and his wife's ashes will ake place at a future date in the amily plot at Crestview Memorial Park in Grove City, Penn. elissa Jackson harleston, S.C. Jeremey Jackson, 2007 graduate of Owen High School, lost is wife, Melissa Jackson of El aso Texas, on Nov. 3. The couple had recently moved to Charleston S.C., following honorable discharge. eremy served ight years in the Army, achieving the rank of ser- eant and serving ours in Korea, Iraq and Afghan- stan.

213, Marshall, C. 28753. Matilda Rice Shell Black Mountain atilda Rice Shell, age 96, of 1 11N. Doughtery St. died Monday, November 10, 2014.

Mrs. Shell was born November 22, 1917 in Buncombe Count where she had lived all of her life and was a member of Faith Freewill Baptist Church in Black Mountain. She and her ate husband, Revered Raymond hell, were involved in many churches with their ministry from 1949 until 1999. A daughter to the late Robert and Dora Anders Rice, Mrs. Shell was also preceded in death by her hus- and Reverend Raymond Shell, who died in 2003; son, Roy Shell; aughter, Bernice Doan.

Surviving are her daughters, Betty Smith and husband Lawrence of Wea- erville, Pauline Murphy of Leicester, Mon ell Mehaffey a nd husband ayne of Leicester, Linda Knupp and husband Bruce of Leicester; on, Ray Shell and wife Barbara of Brevard; 14 grandchildren, 15 reat grandchildren and 4 great- great-grandchildren. Her funer- a service was held at 11a.m., hursday, November 13, 2014, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Weaverville, with Rev. Lawrence mith, Rev. Coy Wheeler and Mr. Howard Wheeler officiating.

Burial was in Sky View Memorial Park with Reverend Russell Wheeler officiating. The family received friends 6to 8 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.
