at the age of51. Tom's volunteer-ism began at an early age with the TB Society (now American Lung Association) while still in college, and his involvement with ALA spanned more than 50 years. He served as National President of ALA from 1996 to 1997, and was awarded the prestigious Will Ross Medal for volunteerism and contributions to the prevention and control of lung disease. Further organizations where Tom volunteered throughout the years include Andean Rural Health Care, Task Force for the Homeless, Habitat for Humanity, Community Foundation of Western North Carolina and Meals on Wheels. Tom was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion and enjoyed attending the Senior Men's Class at Glen-wood Baptist Church.

Tom and Margaret returned to their hometown of Marion in 1998, where they enjoyed traveling, gardening and family time before Margaret's passing in 2004. Tom's love of family and friends, and the time spent with them, were the most important things in his life. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his greatest joys. of course, his dog, A gentle, kind man and a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, his life was spent in humble service to those in need and in quiet grace with those he loved. Tom is survived by his four children: Dee Montgomery and her husband, Mark, Paige Gibson and his wife, Susan, Jim Gibson and his wife, Kenita, and Jeannie Porter.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Erik Montgomery and his wife, Renee, Neill Gibson and his wife, Charissa, Sarah Kotronis and her husband, Paul, Kyle Porter, Rebekah Mace and her husband, Tyler, and Rachel Gibson. His great-grandchildren include Stone, Bethel, Peter, John, Joshua, Hannah, Grace and Abigail Gibson and Ian and Elijah Kotronis. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening, February 23, 2013, from 4 to 6 PM at Westmoreland Chapel. A celebration of Tom's life will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2013 at 2 p.m. in Westmoreland Chapel with Revs.

An online register is available under OBITUARIES at MARION Thomas Francis "Tom" Gibson, age 86, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Feb ruary 2U, at the McDowell Hospital in Marion, North Carolina.

His loving family was with him at his passing and rejoices that he is with his Lord. A native of Cordova in Orangeburg County, SC, he was born on March 20, 1926 to the late Carl Sawyer Gibson and Gladys Goodson Gibson. Tom's family moved to McDowell County in 1934, where he attended Pleasant Gardens School and graduated from Marion High School. Tom was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, enlisting at the age of 17 and serving in the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres aboard the U.S.S.

Albemarle. Following his discharge he attended Brevard College, and subsequently Wake Forest University, graduating with a B.S. in Pre-Med. Tom taught 8th grade at Clinchfield Jr. High in Marion for two years before enrolling in the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, receiving his Master's Degree in Health Education.

In 1948 he married his childhood sweetheart, Margaret Westmoreland. From 1952 to 1955 Tom served as Executive Director of the Mecklenburg County Tuberculosis and Health Association. From 1955 until his retirement in 1986 he was employed first as Director of Health Education and Training, while also directing the Georgia Mental Health Planning Project He later became the Director of Primary Health Care, responsible for setting up MINNIES. BROWN ASHEVILLE Asheville Minnie Bell Sams Brown, 86, born February 10, 1927 went home to be with Jesus February 20, 2013. A native of Madison County, Mrs.

Brown was a member of Locust Grove Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for years. She was the daughter of the late Chords and Dessie Rice Sams and was also preceded in death by her brothers, Emerson Sams and Ernest Sams; sister, Robena Sams Metcalf and former husbands, James Vernon Burleson, Jr. and Clark "Pete" Brown. Surviving are her daughters, Jackie Crow and Marsha Ruby and husband Dan all of Knox-ville, TN; son, Morris "Moose" Burleson and wife Sandy of Weaverville; grandsons, Jeremy Ruby, Jonathan and wife Brittany, Nathaniel and Samuel Crow; great grandsons, Isaiah and Jordan Ruby; step grandsons, Rodney Keaton and wife Anna and Rhett Keaton; step granddaughter, Molly Anderson; step children, Jerry and Joe Burleson, Judy Griffin, Clark Brown and Judy Brown Garren; brothers, Edward Sams and wife Betty of Carters-ville, VA and Ellis Sams CLEATUS C. FREEMAN LEICESTER Cleatus Coleman Freeman, 87, of Leicester passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at Elderberry Healthcare.

Mr. Freeman was bom March 31, 1925 in Madison County. He was a US Army Veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bevily and Vernie Ball Freeman; son, Frederick Freeman; and a granddaughter, Christy Freeman; sisters, Omega Rice and Wilma Roberts. Surviving are his daughter, Mary Presnell (Jack); son, Larry Freeman (Aundry) of Leicester, nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Agnes Childress (Dave), Arlene Hunter (Wade) and Ruth Former (Ed).

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 23, 2013 in the chapel of Madison Funeral Home with Reverends Jeff Fox and Cliff Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the Flint Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12-1 p.m. Saturday prior to the service.

BRYSON SYLVA Harley C. Bryson "H.C.", 78, of Sylva died Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Skyland Care Center in Sylva, NC. A lifelong resident of Jackson County, H.C. was born June 15, 1934.

He is the son of the late Arthur and the late Beulah (Stew-man) Bryson. He was employed at Ensley's and Pott's Supermarkets, and later was self-employed. He loved traveling, Gospel music and good food. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Geneva Conner, and by three brothers: Tince, CA, and Jim "Babe" Bryson. He is survived by sons, Rick Bryson (Kyra) of Sylva, Randy Bryson (Raylene) of Waynesville, and Robby Bryson of Asheville; a daughter, Lisa B.

Hoyle (Mike) of Sylva, and Wayne Smith of Sylva, who he thought of as family, two sisters he adored, Violet Bowers of LARRY STEVEN PENIX MARSHALL Larry Steven Penix, 44, died Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at his residence. A native of Buncombe County, Larry was a son of Steve and Nancy B. Penix of Asheville. He worked at Grace Healthcare of Asheville as a CNA and was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Larry is survived by a brother, David Penix and his wife, Elisha and was uncle of Sydney, Jordan, Madison and Joshua, Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with Pastor Larry Appleby and Rev.

He was 68.

Ayers was an important figure in the British psychedelic movement spearheaded by the Beatles in the late 1960s. He did not achieve sustained commercial success, but his work is treasured by musicians and many fans. Jack McLean, assistant to the managing director of Lo-Max Records in London, said Thursday that Ayers' body had been discovered in his bed at his home in the medieval village Montolieu in the south of France. "We believe he died Feb. 18 of natural causes and was found two days later," McLean said.

"He hadn't been ill, but he lived a rock 'n' roll lifestyle and everything that comes with that." Ayers, who was raised partly in Malaysia, moved to Canterbury on his return to England and formed Soft Machine in 1966 with drummer and singer Robert Wyatt. They took the name from a novel by author William Burroughs.
