A shroud of mystery still clung tonight about circumstances surrounding the death of Stanhope Hudson, aged Inmate of the Burke county home. Hudson was found near death early yesterday in the yard of Simeon "Brlttaln's home four miles south of Morganton. His throat had been slashed with an old pocket knife. He disappeared from the county home Monday night. He died this morning at Grace hospital after pneumonia developed. Before his death, however, he revived revived slightly and Indicated to persons persons questioning him that someone reside himself had cut his throat. Officers said they believe It probable probable Hudson committed suicide, but added that there were some Indications Indications of foul play. Mr. and Mrs. Erlttaln reported thnt soon after they arose early in the morning they heard groans nnd upon Investigation, they found Hudson Hudson lying In their yard, apparently dying. They took him In their home, administered administered first aid as best they could while awaiting arrival of a physician and tho sheriff, for whom they telephoned. He was removed to the hospital, where it was hoped for a time his life could be saved. When he revived revived sufficiently he was questioned concerning his wounds, but could only Indicate he was the victim of foul play. Pneumonia developed and he succumbed some hours later. Guy McGimsey, superintendent of the Burke county home, told officers that the old man likely had a number number of bills on his person, but only a small amount of change was in his pocket after he was found at the Brlttaln home. Mr. McGimsey also said that Hudson always wore an old black hat, but the hnt was missing missing and a cap was beside the wounded wounded man.
